Southern Children’s Physiotherapy is an independent and private paediatric (children's)physiotherapy practice specialising in treating children with neurological problems. We also see children with developmental delay or other chromosonal/genetic conditions that may affect a child's development.
Southern Children’s Physiotherapy can offer a variety of techniques to promote your child’s function and independence, and can include the well known Bobath Approach to physiotherapy. A Bobath Therapist has in depth knowledge of neurological treatment techniques that can help to maximise your child's potential.
Southern Children’s Physiotherapy has experience of working with children of all ages, from birth to 19 years. You will find that your child’s physiotherapy needs change as they grow, and during significant milestones in their life. We are able to support you and your child through this, and provide them with the exact amount of physiotherapy that they require.
Many private paediatric physiotherapists treat children without having specialist experience in working with children with neurological problems, or even any experience of working with children (paediatrics). Your child is entitled to specialised paediatric physiotherapy and therapeutic handling that will help to promote their development and maximise their quality of life and independence.
If your child needs support in their educational setting - Southern Children's Physiotherapy is able to do this. Southern Children's physiotherapy is able to visit your child's nursery, pre school or school. This can ensure that everybody involved in your child's life knows exactly what they can be doing to help.
Bobath therapy is an approach that aims to normalise your child’s tone; e.g. if they have any increased stiffness in their arms and legs or if they are floppy to hold; in order to help them use more normal patterns of movement .This is achieved through therapeutic handling in different postures and during movement.
It is important for everyone close to the child to learn these techniques so that they can be used in everyday life. Southern Children’s Physiotherapy will help you to achieve this in the easiest and most functional way possible. A Bobath trained children's physiotherapist will be able to change this advice as your child progresses.
At Southern Children’s Physiotherapy, we treat any neurological condition, even if your child has not received a formal diagnosis. It may be that your child is just delayed in their development (developmental delay), and we will be able to help them to achieve their gross motor milestones, thus maximising their potential. Alternatively, your child may have a diagnosis of Cerebral Palsy.
Cerebral Palsy is an umbrella terms that describes an event that has taken place in your child’s brain either whilst they were still in the womb, during birth or in the early part of their life. This damage to the brain does not change, but it does affect how your child develops. Cerebral Palsy may present physically – with increased stiffness, floppiness, or uncoordinated movements, and/or in other aspects of their development.
Southern Children’s Physiotherapy can work with your child to maximise their quality of life, and more importantly maximise their functional ability whilst having fun.
